The Reader is the Bernhard Schlink' s novel inspired and then published in 1995, which is based on the story of an affair between a teenager and an older woman. These two protagonists begin an affair, passionate and intense, which abruptly ends when Hanna (Kate Winslet) disappears without any explanation. The story starts with an interesting event when a teenager of 15 years,Michael Berg, suffering of scarlet fever and collapses on the street, is rescued and led to home by Hanna Schmitz, a mysterious woman twice older than him. After coming into convalescence, the young foreigner is looking to thank for the woman’s help and between them starts a wonderful and intense love story that ends suddenly, when Hanna is going away from Michael's life.
Eight years later, in Germany after the Second World War, Michael Berg – was s student at Law University, very interested and following processes of Nazis accused of war crimes. He meets his ex girlfriend, who broke his heart, and left him in a total confusion, in very delicate circumstances. Now Hanna Schmitz is being accused for a very hideous murder, and because she refuses to defend herself at trial, Michael begins to suspect that the woman he loved a decade ago hides a secret that he considered more shameful than the crime itself.
The Reader, both as novel and as film, is an excellent character study, a presentation. It is actually a man's way of training and events that have marked later life. For those who have seen the film, we definitely recommend reading the book for a better relationship with the characters.
We consider that we have to praise Kate Winslet, who played Hanna Schmitz for the lack of modesty and how she translated this amazing character, and David Kross, as Michael Berg who keeps both the chip and the spirit of candor and lack of experience initiated and hidden in the mysterious teenager. The character evolving at all levels, and the incredible feelings remain altered by the suddenly loss of love for Hannah, and he reached maturity, when played by Ralph Fiennes, still seeking answers to questions of youth. But watching this movie we have the opportunity to learn even from Hanna, to admire how she gives back again and feels intimidated, as we did in youth. The Reader is a film that emphasizes the qualities of the great actress Kate Winslett, a solid drama with a script, but unpredictable. It is like a life lesson that the director presents us in a refined ambiance, showing love that knows no limits, no age. You can fall in love with anyone, but, besides happiness, later you will have to support your choice and deception. It is a great and remarkable movie that enchants our souls with spectacular scenes.
