Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York. His mother, Mary Lee Mapother, has left his father when Tom was twelve. His mother took Tom and his sister Lee Anne with her. For the next period, he lived in Ottawa, Ontario, Louisville, Kentucky, Illinois and New Jersey. He studied for one year in a Franciscan seminary. He graduated the Glen Ridge High School from New Jersey, in 1980. The turning point of his career is the role of cadet in "Taps" (1981), a role which brought him in the attention of producers.
In 1990 he received the award People's Choice at the category Favorite Actor and Chicago Film Festival at the category best actor, for the film "Born on the Fourth of July". Four years later, "National Board of Review" awards him as the Best Actor for his role in "Jerry Maguire" and "Golden Satellite" offering the same award. In 1997 he received the award for the best male performance at the MTV Movie Awards for "Jerry Maguire". In 1998 he received the John Huston Award for Artists Rights. He was nominated for Oscar three times with his incredible roles in "Born on the Fourth ofJuly" (1989), "Jerry Maguire" (1996) and "Magnolia" (1999) and won three Golden Globe Awards with the same movies. In 2000, he played again the role of international agent Ethan Hunt in John Woo's film, Mission Impossible 2, and the film proved to be a really wonderful success.
