Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. was born on December 28, 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York. His father, Denzel Sr. was a Pentecostal minister and his mother, Lynne was a gospel singer, hairdresser and the owner of a beauty salon. When he was a child most of the time he spent in his mother's beauty salon, but was also listening to the sermons of his father. It is said form that time came to Denzel the interest for acting, thanks to the heated conversations around him.

He attended the primary school at Pennington Grimes, being interested of different sports. In childhood he wanted to attend Texas Tech University, then he thought about a career in medicine.

In 1977, is following the faculty of Journalism at the Fordham University and after graduation is going to San Francisco, where wins a scholarship at the American Conservatory Theatre.

He remains at ATC for one year and then starts playing in several movies for television, such as Wilma and debuts on big screens in 1981 with Carbon Copy.

In 1982 gets married with Pauletta Pearson, an actress and pianist, whom he knows from the set from Wilma, with whom he has four children: John David, Katia and twins Malcolm and Olivia. He is trying to stay as much time with his family in the "mansion" that he bought in Los Angeles. Denzel owns the production company Mundy Lane Entertainment, named after the street where he grew.
