Richard Gere was born on August 29, 1949 in Philadelphia. He is the second from the five childrens of the Gere family. When he was small he liked music, and so began to play to some instruments in high school and even wrote some songs for school performances.

He graduated the high school known as North Syracuse Central High School in 1967 and won a gymnastic scholarship at the University of Massachusetts. He left college after two years
to play in movies. His first role was in 1973, in the musical "Grease". In 1978 he traveled to Tibet and Nepal, where he talked with many monks and passed to the Buddhist religion.

In 1988 he refused the leading role in "Die Hard", which was played after by Bruce Willis. In 1990 he starred in the very popular film "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts. On December 12, 1991, Richard married to Cindy Crawford but divorced in 1995. Richard Gere makes his debut with a minor role of a pimp in the 1975 Report to the Commissioner, a great melodrama. In 1976 he plays in Baby Blue Marine, a drama during the Second World War, playing the role of a military with psychotic trends. This performance will make him remarkable for filmmakers who will distribute him in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Days of Heaven and the Yanks. In December 1979, Gere comes back on stage and plays on Broadway a leading role, that of Max, in the play Bent by Martin Sherman, evoking the life of a homosexual in Nazi Germany.

The magazine People named him the "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1999. In 2002, he appeared in three major releases: in the horror thriller Mothman Prophecies, the drama Unfaithful, and Chicago (the version that won an Academy Award) for which he won a Golden Globe for the "Best Actor – for Comedy or Musical". Gere's film of 2004, Shall We Dance, was a box office success with $ 170 million worldwide, but his next film, Bee Season of 2005, was a commercial failure.

Gere was declared the "Man of the Year" by the Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals  in 2006.
In 2007, he starred with Terrence Howard and Jesse Eisenberg in Hunting Party, a comic thriller in which he played the role of a journalist in Bosnia. In the same year he starred close to Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and Cate Blanchett, in the film I'm Not There by Todd Haynes.
