Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981 in Basel, Switzerland. He is a professional tennis player who holds the record of 237 weeks atop the ATP rankings. Federer has won 13 Grand Slam tournaments (three Australian Open, 5 Wimbledon and 5 U.S. Open) and still has won only one Grand Slam tournament to surpass the best tennis player ever, Pete Samepras. Roger Federer holds many records, including the longest string of victories on grass, 65 and the longest string of victories on hard, 56. Roger Federer's rival is for few years, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, because whom Roger Federer has never won at Roland Garros, on Paris clay.
In 1995, at 14, Federer became a tennis champion at juniors category and was selected for the national tennis team Ecublens, Sweden. He remained there until he finished the high school, in 1997 and began to participate more and more at competitions for juniors. That same year, he restarted the association with the coach Carter and in a very short time he became a professional.
In 1998, the last season at junior, Federer won both Wimbledon and other major awards. In July he passed to professionals and was accepted as a tennis player in the Association of Professionals (ATP). The following year he began training with Peter Lundgren from Sweden and became the youngest player entered in top 100 organized by ATP. He held this record for four years, the one who exceeded him was Richard Gasquet.
Roger Federer debuted when started playing for Sweden. In 2000, he attended the Sydney Olympics and reached the semifinals, finishing on the position number 4. In the same year Federer reached the finals of the championships held in Basel and Marseille but lost the leadership.
Federer won the ATP tournament in 2001 by defeating the Frenchman Julien Boutter. Then he won three Davis Cups and reached the championships of Wimbledon and French Open quarterfinals. He ended the year ranked as number 1 in Sweden and 13 in the standings.
In January 2002, Federer defeated Juan Ignacio Chela and in February won the Davis Cup matches with Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin Russians, both holding the world titles. Andre Agassi defeated the tennis player in the final Masters Series held in Milan. The year of 2003 was marked by numerous gains. Roger won consecutive championships in Marseille, Dubai and Munich, the first Grand Slam victory, the championship at Wimbledon have provided leadership in the sport. The tennis player ranked Sweden on the 1st position at Davis Cup in the Tennis Masters Cup championship.
Without the support of a coach, Federer won against Safin in the Australian Open championship. In February 2004 he won the first position in the ATP top and he defeated Guillermo Coria the in matches from Hamburg. In June he faced Andy Roddick at Wimbledon and rewrote the history of tennis with victories at the Masters Series in Toronto, U.S. Open and Tennis Masters Cup in Houston.
Roger started the year of 2005 by maintaining the leadership position in top ATP but lost the match with Safin in the semifinals in Miami. In May he won the Masters but missed the third French Open in favor of Rafael Nadal. At Halle he won both the doubles competition and the individual one. Currently he is training with the Australian Tony Roche for the Grand Slam championship.
