Saffron
Saffron is the only substance in this poll which is cheaper than gold. Its price is of 11.13 USD per gram. Saffron is a flowering plant that can be used as a natural remedy against everything from depression ending with menstrual cycles. Saffron has a high price for two reasons: first of all, its production is very difficult, and secondly, the aroma, the taste and the medicinal properties of turmeric have no equal among the spices. Saffron has dried stigmas of crocus pistils purple (Crocus sativus), which massively bloom only 10-15 days a year, and the duration of the flowering of each flower is only 2-3 days. For the collection and the processing of flowers of the crocus pistils only manual labor is used. Stigmas must be cut on the first day when the flower opens. The quality of saffron depends on the speed of the collection and drying. To get a kilo of saffron, it is necessary to go at dawn until the sun dries the pistils and collect about 150 000 colors. The field area of one acre gives a yield of 4-5 kg of saffron, depending on the weather and the professionalism of the collectors.
